People living longer and healthier lives is one of the major achievements of modern society.  But ageing is also a source of economic concern because it can undermine long-term growth and the sustainability of public finances.  OECD work quantifies the potential magnitude of these effects, given current policy arrangements and identifies reforms that deal with the fiscal and economic consequences of ageing, improve living standards and the quality of life, and contribute to a more equitable and cohesive society.

How economies have responded to the challenges posed by ageing populations have been assessed in a series of detailed examinations for selected country surveys, and thematic reviews in selected member countries on improving the prospects for older people in the labour market.  All of these studies will contribute to a comprehensive overview paper on fiscal and social implications of ageing in member countries.
