Migration and Development: France and Africa

Jeff Dayton-Johnson of the Development Centre reminded participants at the international seminar "Réussir le développement solidaire France/Afrique" of the importance of greater co-ordination between migration and development policies – in order to meet more effectively both sets of policy goals.

Better co-ordination must be based on a realistic understanding of the dynamics of the migration process, Mr. Dayton-Johnson argued. Migration alone will not be enough to foster development; conversely, development will not reduce migratory flows in the short to medium term.

The seminar, organised by the Fondation Concorde, brought together the French Minister of State for Cooperation and Francophony and senior officials of the Ministry of Immigration, Integration, National Identity and Development Solidarity, as well as representatives of the African diaspora in France.
