OECD commends Portugal for progress in implementing reforms in tertiary education

OECD countries have commended Portugal for progress made towards modernising its tertiary education system. Over the past three years, the Portuguese government has implemented reforms to encourage institutions to be more responsive to the needs of society and the economy. These give institutions more autonomy and room for manoeuvre but require them, in return, to be more clearly accountable to society.

Second round of reviews of higher education in regional development launched

OECD/IMHE reviews of HE in regional development were launched on 10-11 September 2008. Delegates from ten regions participated in the Workshop opened by Aart De Geus, OECD Deputy Secretary General . The regions that have made a commitment to join the review process in 2008-2010 are:  Berlin (Germany),   Bio Bio region (Chile),  Campinas (Brazil),  the Galilee (Israel),  Rotterdam (Netherlands),  Southern Arizona (US) and  Veracruz (Mexico). New regions will be considered until the end of November 2008.
